The National Prevention Strategy, released in 2011, contains tobacco control as considered one of seven priorities throughout the U.S. Of these hospital-acquired events, catheter-associated urinary tract infections are among the many most common. Research has proven that a good portion of these infections could be prevented, avoiding patient morbidity and mortality from this HAI whereas reducing prices accrued to the healthcare system. At any given time, about one in every 25 hospitalized patients has a healthcare-associated infection while over 1 million HAIs occur across the united states healthcare system every year. These infections can result in important morbidity and mortality, with tens of 1000's of lives lost each year.
